About

Our History
In 1981, following four years of discussion the Women’s
Forum was established. That same year the forum elected
a president and secretary. One of the main tasks before
the forum was to become incorporated as a 501(C)(3). A
certificate of incorporation was issued to the Women’s
Forum on May 21, 1981. The next year a Women’s Shelter
was opened in Ridgeway. That shelter was named the
Rainbow House.
By 1984, the shelter was no longer the only program
which the Women’s Forum operated. There were two paid
staff members and a new shelter. In that same year,
another big change took place. Now that the Women’s
Forum had a base of operation, it changed its name to
Citizens Against Family Violence, Inc (CAFV).
This year CAFV is celebrating 29 years of providing
confidential services to women and children affected by
domestic violence, sexual violence and homelessness.
With 16 employees, volunteers and community
collaborations we are taking our prevention program to
new levels by increasing community awareness on domestic
violence, sexual violence and homelessness.
Our Mission
is to empower the women and children of the city of
Martinsville, Henry and Patrick counties who have been
affected by domestic violence, sexual assault and
homelessness. It is our goal that each person should be
free from violence and exploitation.
Our Vision
is to be a catalyst in establishing communities where
victims of domestic violence, sexual violence and
homelessness are protected, life is esteemed, home is
sacred, fear is unknown, and violence is unthinkable.
